The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fourth Grade Gussie L. Jewett (ASN: 39093026), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Second Company, Second Regiment, First Service Force, in action against the enemy near Borgo Piavo, Italy, on 21 May 1944. When his platoon was pinned down by superior automatic fire and artillery fire, Technician Fourth Grade Jewett, unmindful of his own safety, moved into an exposed area and opened fire on the enemy crew with his automatic rifle. His fire killed or wounded all its crew members and each time, as the enemy attempted to bring up a new crew to the gun, his accurate fire prevented the enemy from succeeding. During the course of the incident several snipers and machine gunners were trying to eliminate Technician Fourth Grade Jewett, and later while covering his platoon’s withdrawal, he was mortally wounded. The courageous action of Technician Fourth Grade Jewett reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Army of the United States.
