The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph A. Jeruzal (ASN: RA-19344348), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 September 1951, near Ukkonggi, Korea, Company A, 1st Battalion, occupying defensive positions on Hill 487, was attacked by the enemy under cover of intense small arms and mortar fire. Although Corporal Jeruzal’s squad withdrew to safety behind the slope of the hill in the face of the fusillade, he remained alone in an exposed position manning his light machine gun; and, as the enemy advanced to within fifty yards of his position, Corporal Jeruzal delivered a highly effective fire on the foe, inflicting thirty casualties, disorganizing and slowing the assault. His selfless action enabled the Company in initiate a counterattack and repulse the enemy with complete success. Corporal Jeruzal’s outstanding gallantry and courageous determination reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
