The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Harold A. Jenkins (ASN: 0-441117), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 January 1951, near Yongin, Korea, Company I had the mission of attacking dominating terrain occupied by the enemy. When the advance of his unit was stopped by intense enemy fire, Captain Jenkins unhesitatingly moved to the most forward elements of his company, encouraging his men and directing them to fix bayonets for an assault on the enemy-held stronghold. Courageously dashing ahead of his company, he led the men forward in a vigorous assault and routed the hostile forces. While he was deploying his company in a perimeter defense of the newly gained position, the enemy struck from the right flank. Dispatching one platoon to meet this threat, Captain Jenkins remained to assist in the evacuation and treatment of casualties. When the platoon was subjected to mortar and automatic weapons fire, Captain Jenkins ran to the platoon to encourage the men to hold their ground. Returning through the hail of fire, he assembled reinforcements and personally led them around the enemy’s right flank. During the ensuing action Captain Jenkins was wounded by enemy rifle fire but courageously remained with his men. When the order to withdraw was received, he stayed with the last elements of his command to supervise the evacuation of the wounded. The selfless gallantry displayed by Captain Jenkins reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
