Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 576 (October 6, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Elmer N. Jeffcoat (ASN: RA-18222895), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 July 1951 in the vicinity of Chajakchong, Korea. On that date Private Jeffcoat was attached to Company B as a radio operator for the forward observer of the 81mm mortars. Due to intense enemy fire, friendly units were forced to withdraw. When some fourteen wounded men were unable to move to positions of safety, due to intense enemy fire, Private Jeffcoat called for covering fire while he and two comrades proceeded to aid the wounded men. With his comrades, he carried two of the wounded men, who were unable to walk, to a safe position and returned to act as a rearguard while the remainder made their way to the company’s new position. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Jeffcoat reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
