Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 192 (June 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Roland J. Jarvey (ASN: ER-46081436), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 February 1951, near Chipyong-ni, Korea. During the night of that date, he was an assistant squad leader of a platoon which was defending a sector of the regimental perimeter near Chipyong-ni. At approximately 2230 hours, the enemy launched a counterattack against the unit’s position, penetrating its lines in one sector. Seeing that the enemy had penetrated the regimental perimeter, Corporal Jarvey, with total disregard for his personal safety, voluntarily moved to an exposed position from which he could effectively fire upon the enemy. Despite the fact that intense enemy small arms, hand grenade, and mortar fire was falling all around him, he remained in this exposed position and continued to fire his weapon. During this action, he was killed. His courageous action and the effective fire placed by him were decisive factors in causing the enemy to discontinue their attack and withdraw to their former positions. The gallant conduct of Corporal Jarvey on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
