The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Bobby L. James, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 7th Reconnaissance Company, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Hoengsong, Korea, on 12 February 1951. On this date, Corporal James was acting as scout observer with the platoon’s scout section. As the units of the company entered the town, they were subjected to intense enemy fire from the surrounding high ground. During the ensuing battle, Corporal James observed that a soldier manning .50 caliber antiaircraft position at the rear deck of a tank, was having difficulty with this operation, Corporal James, without regard for his personal safety, voluntarily moved from his covered position to the assistance of his comrade. When the regular gunner was mortally wounded by enemy fire, Corporal James assumed the gunner’s position. While serving as gunner Corporal James was wounded, nevertheless he remained in position and directed effective fire on the enemy until his gun was neutralized by enemy fire. He continued to direct small arms fire at the enemy until his unit was told to withdraw. The gallantry displayed by Corporal James on this occasion reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
