The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Richard F. Jaeger (ASN: 36027723), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 15 February 1944. Technician Fifth Grade jaeger rescued a severely wounded soldier from an exposed position at Bougainville, Braving intense enemy fire, he made his way over rugged terrain to reach the wounded man. After applying first aid, he carried the soldier to the bivouac area. At one point during his return, Technician Fifth Grade Jaeger had to cross a stream in full view of hostile riflemen and machine gunners, but he made the crossing safely although the Japanese laid down intense fire in an attempt to halt him. Technician Fifth Grade Jaeger’s outstanding courage and fidelity to duty were responsible for saving the life of a wounded comrade and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
