The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Bernard C. Jacobson (ASN: US-56074524), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Kach’il-bong, Korea. On this date, during an assault upon an enemy-held hill, Company K was halted by intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from well-fortified enemy positions. Completely disregarding his own safety, Private Jacobson immediately went forward of his unit and, advancing into the intense hostile fire, destroyed the enemy emplacements with hand grenades. As a result, his comrades were able to advance with a minimum of casualties. Upon reaching the crest of the hill, Private Jacobson came across several hostile riflemen. He unhesitatingly engaged the enemy and succeeded in killing them outright with his rifle. Through his courageous actions, his unit was able to move into the final assault and secure its objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Jacobson on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
