The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Marshall J. Jacobs (ASN: 0-1329953), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23 April 1952, Lieutenant Jacobs led a patrol from his company in an assault on “Breadloaf” Hill, a position near Maktae-Dong, Korea, which concealed numerous enemy machine gun and reverse slope mortar positions that had previously inflicted heavy friendly casualties. He led the first wave of the assault group to within fifty yards of the crest of the Hill when suddenly it came under an intense hail of enemy machine gun, small arms and grenade fire. Although painfully wounded by the initial burst of fire, Lieutenant Jacobs refused medical attention and moved about the area, encouraging and instilling in his men a firm determination to complete their mission. By fearless and skillful leadership, he led the men into the trenches, fighting in close proximity with the foe until all the hostile troops in the trench were killed or forced to flee. Remaining in the area for approximately twenty-five minutes, he led his men against bunker after bunker until it was determined that the mission was successfully completed and the order was given to withdraw. Lieutenant Jacobs’ outstanding gallantry and inspirational leadership reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
