The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] John J. Jacobs (ASN: RA-17253526), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. In the early morning hours of 1 September 1950, near Kwanian, Korea, Sergeant Jacob’s unit was under fierce attack by numerically superior hostile troops. Braving an intense barrage of artillery, mortar and automatic weapons fire, he skillfully directed the fire of his machine gun section until displacement was ordered. During two successive displacements and counter-thrusts, he maneuvered his weapon with deadly accuracy and, although wounded in the back and legs, resolutely remained with his section until the final assault routed the enemy and secured the commanding hill. Sergeant Jacob’s courage, determination and inspirational leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
