The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Albert Harvey Bell, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Les Franquettes Farm, France, 23 July 1918. While acting as battalion gas officer, Lieutenant Bell volunteered and took charge of a squad of men, captured a machine gun and eight prisoners. He was killed while attempting to take a second machine gun.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Albert H. Bell, Jr., United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Bell displayed great heroism and fine leadership near les Franquettes Farm, 23 July 1918. While acting as Battalion Gas Officer he voluntarily took a squad of men and captured a machine gun and eight prisoners. He was killed while attempting to capture a second machine gun.
