The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph R. Jackson (ASN: 0-1318901), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date, Lieutenant Jackson led a reconnaissance patrol with the mission of locating enemy positions prior to the attack. As the patrol advanced, it was suddenly subjected to intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons and grenade fire. During the ensuing action, Lieutenant Jackson was wounded but remained in position until he had gathered the necessary information and then ordered his men to withdraw. Upon reaching the remainder of his unit, Lieutenant Jackson rallied his men and led them in an assault upon the enemy hill. Despite the intense hostile fire, he moved among his men shouting words of encouragement and firing his weapon, personally inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. As they neared the objective, Lieutenant Jackson was again wounded and had to be evacuated. However, his men, inspired by his dauntless courage continued to advance and successfully accomplish their mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Jackson on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
