    Action Date:

    February 14, 1944

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Gerald J. Hurley, United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, in England, on 14 February 1944. Upon seeing that a horse attached to a parcel van had bolted from fright and had run away, thereby endangering the lives of many passersby, Private Hurley, with complete disregard for his own safety, overtook the vehicle, climbed through it to the shafts, secured hold of the reins, and succeeded in bringing the frightened animal to a halt. The heroism displayed by Private Hurley on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
