The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Kenneth C. Hurla (ASN: RA-38764801), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date elements of his regiment were cut off by the enemy who had infiltrated to their rear. These elements were forced to form an attacking line in an attempt to break through the enemy encirclement. Corporal Hurla established a temporary aid station in order to treat and evacuate wounded. With complete disregard for his personal safety he exposed himself constantly to severe enemy mortar and small arms fire as he treated and collected wounded soldiers. Throughout a period of 24 hours he continued his tireless efforts, evacuating all litter cases and treating most of the walking wounded. His selfless devotion to his wounded comrades resulted in saving the lives of several men. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Corporal Hurla reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
