The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Homer Hungerford (ASN: 1881916), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the afternoon of 6 December 1952, Lieutenant Hungerford of comp a, volunteered to inform the squad at Checkpoint A, in the vicinity of Manyon-Ni, Korea, to re-occupy Checkpoint B. In reaching the objective, Lieutenant Hungerford and the two men he had taken with him, were subjected to a barrage of hostile fire. Upon delivering the message, Lieutenant Hungerford found the hostile fire too intense for the squad to leave their positions. Employing his two men to deliver covering fire, he attempted to occupy Checkpoint B. Reaching a vantage point, he fired his weapon, so accurately that the hostile fire directed at Checkpoint A was silenced. When the friendly elements were ordered to return to their lines, Lieutenant Hungerford remained, calling in covering fire and insuring that the men reached positions of safety with a minimum of casualties. Rejoining friendly forces, Lieutenant Hungerford volunteered to return to Checkpoint B but due to the severity of his wounds, he was forced to accept evacuation. The second assault group was so inspired by his courage that they overran the enemy and secured the objective. Lieutenant Hungerford’s outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
