The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Ernest Hundt (ASN: ER-55014901), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date, Sergeant Hundt was assigned to Company B which was engaged in a fierce battle with an overwhelming enemy force. Sergeant Hundt, an 81-mm. mortar forward observer, in an attempt to seek enemy emplacements, exposed himself to intense hostile machine gun and sniper fire. His accurate and timely observation of enemy positions was responsible for neutralizing many of them and relieved much pressure from the attacking forces. After his radio operator was killed, Sergeant Hundt again exposed himself to hostile fire while moving along the ridge line. He fired his personal weapon steadily and accurately, keeping the enemy from his wounded comrades and accounting for numerous enemy casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Hundt on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
