The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Clyde V. Humphrey (ASN: RA-19303868), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 22 May 1951, near Chisch-tong, Korea, while reconnoitering an area near Hill 1024, Sergeant Humphrey’s platoon was subjected to a merciless barrage of mortar, automatic weapons, and small arms fire. Sergeant Humphrey immediately placed his machine gun and 3.5 rocket launcher in position and directed fire at the enemy entrenchments. Withering enemy counterfire forced the platoon to withdraw to more tenable positions and heavy casualties were sustained by the machine gun squad. While his fellow soldiers slowly withdrew, Sergeant Humphrey single-handedly held off the enemy until everyone reached safety. After fighting his way through an attempted enemy encirclement, he reorganized the scattered elements of the platoon and personally conducted an orderly withdrawal. Sergeant Humphrey’s gallant actions saved the lives of many of his comrades and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
