Headquarters, II Corps, General Orders No. 32 (May 2, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Emmett B. Hughes (ASN: 38098309), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Company **, ** Signal Battalion, on ** August 1943, on the ***** Road, Sicily. While driving behind two ammunition trucks, one towing the other, Private Hughes observed flames under the towed truck. After following the trucks for a distance of one-half mile, repeatedly sounding the horn to attract the driver’s attention, he pulled around the trucks on the narrow winding road and halted the lead truck. Disregarding his own personal safety, Private Hughes went immediately under the burning truck, and with the use of the extinguisher, extinguished the flames surround the gasoline tank. The courage and prompt action on the part of Private Hughes undoubtedly saved the truck and ammunition from destruction and the occupants from serious injury.
