The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Harry Cecil Hudson (ASN: RA-39331527), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 September 1950 in the vicinity of Chinan, Korea. On that date Sergeant Hudson was a member of a motorized reconnaissance patrol that was acting as an advance guard for the leading battalion of his regiment during the advance on Chonju. Rounding a curve in the road the patrol was suddenly confronted by a force of approximately forty enemy who were armed with light machine guns and grenades. Intense enemy fire forced the patrol to dismount and seek cover. Sergeant Hudson, disregarding the heavy enemy fire, advanced to the first vehicle and, using it for cover, returned the enemy fire with such deadly accuracy that he forced the enemy to withdraw to a nearby rice paddy. Though he had been wounded in the leg during this exchange of fire, he fearlessly pursued the enemy, firing his rifle and hurling hand grenades. When his ammunition was exhausted, he returned to his vehicle for a re-supply and again set out after the enemy. While moving forward to engage the enemy he was mortally wounded. His intrepidity and selfless devotion to duty inspired his comrades who, following his heroic example, attacked the enemy and drove them from the regimental route of advance. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Hudson reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
