The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Dowell B. Hudson (ASN: 0-2018519), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 October 1951 in the vicinity of Kongnae, Korea. On that date, during an attack by Company C on an enemy-held hill, Lieutenant Hudson advanced with the forward elements and displayed dauntless courage and cool behavior under intense hostile fire. When a heavy concentration of enemy small arms and machine gun fire inflicted numerous friendly casualties, Lieutenant Hudson, with complete disregard for his personal safety, assaulted the enemy positions and succeeded in destroying several hostile bunkers while inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy. Although painfully wounded he continued in the attack until he was forced to be evacuated. His actions and superb leadership were an inspiration to the men of his unit and contributed immeasurably to the success of their mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Hudson on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
