The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Vernon Norman Hoyt (ASN: 0-1325894), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 September 1950 in the vicinity of Am-Dong, Korea. While a platoon leader of a rifle company he was assigned the mission of establishing a combat outpost line along the battalion front to serve as a warning unit in the event of an enemy infiltration. During the night the platoon was encircled by enemy infiltration and attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. Though completely surrounded, and without supplies or reinforcements, Lieutenant Hoyt daringly led his platoon in several damaging attacks against the enemy forward positions. For three continuous days the platoon hurled back repeated enemy assaults and inflicted heavy losses upon the enemy. Only when the security of the battalion line was firmly established did Lieutenant Hoyt lead the remainder of his platoon through the enemy and back to the safety of the battalion perimeter. The inspirational and gallant heroism displayed by Lieutenant Hoyt during this period reflects great credit upon himself and fully upholds the highest traditions of the military service.
