Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 640 (October 27, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Paul L. Hoyt (ASN: US-52026916), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Worun-ni, Korea. On this date Company G was set up in defensive positions to repel a fanatical enemy attack. Sergeant Hoyt, a 60-mm. mortar gunner, secured an extremely dangerous and exposed position as the enemy attacked the line of defense. From this position he returned an effective and accurate mortar fire upon the advancing hostile force. Sergeant Hoyt’s continuous fire soon attracted concentrations of enemy shells, one of them wounding him in the arm. Undaunted, he carried his mortar to a new position and disregarding his painful wound, re-supplied himself with more ammunition and continued his action. His courageous efforts accounted for numerous enemy casualties and were instrumental in repulsing the enemy attack. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Hoyt on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
