The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Max G. Horton (ASN: 0-956673), United States Army, for heroic achievement as a member of Battery A, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 23 to 25 May 1951 in the vicinity of Sonshon, Korea. During that period he was an Artillery Liaison Officer attached to the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, as a Forward Observer to direct the fire of Battery A, in support of Company C. During the night of 23 May his harassing and interdictory fire killed thirty of the enemy and halted an attempted attack on Company C. On 25 May on Hill 698, from atop the highest peak and under the direct observation of the enemy he directed fire on an estimated regiment of the enemy, inflicting an estimated two hundred casualties, and forcing the enemy to withdraw northward. Time and time again Lieutenant Horton exposed himself to the intense enemy fire to move to a better observation post from which he could more accurately direct artillery fire. His preparatory and concentrated barrages on company objectives were exceedingly accurate and aided materially in the taking of objectives. Lieutenant Horton’s devotion to duty, courage and heroism reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
