The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Barry Devere Horton (ASN: US-56986669), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Horton distinguished himself while serving as a Machinegunner with Company A, 3d Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On 3 March 1969, Specialist Horton’s unit was approaching their night position on a hill near Firebase PAUSE in the Central Highlands when they came under heavy fire from enemy positions on the hillside. Immediately the unit took several casualties and the lead element was pinned down by the enemy fire. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Specialist Horton moved forward and laid down a vicious line of fire on the enemy with his machinegun which allowed his comrades to move to safety. Although wounded, he continued to fire keeping the enemy down while the wounded received attention. He continued to strike at the enemy until he was mortally wounded by the enemy fire. Specialist Fourth Class Horton’s complete selflessness, determination, and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
