The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward A. Horrigan (ASN: 0-63442), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 20 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date Lieutenant Horrigan, Commanding Officer of Headquarters Company, was observing elements of the 2d Battalion attempting to attack and secure the enemy held positions on Hill 266, “Old Baldy”. Upon being informed by radio that one company had lost all but one officer, he volunteered to reorganize the company and attempt to retake the lost ground. Reaching the base of the hill, he found and organized a group of approximately 50 men and led them up the hill through a communication trench. About two-thirds of the way up the hill, he halted the group and led an advance group of five volunteers toward the crest, intending to destroy an enemy position located there. Advancing to within 5 yards of the bunker, they were discovered by its occupants who immediately threw grenades at them, painfully wounding Lieutenant Horrigan. Despite his wounds, he succeeded in loading his comrades to the safety of the main body, and was then evacuated. Inspired by his courageous actions, the remainder of the unit continued on their mission, dislodged the enemy and secured the hill. The gallantry and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Horrigan reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
