The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William G. Horn (ASN: 0-2263668), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 16 April 1952, while on a combat patrol near Yu-hyon, Korea, a squad from Company A was suddenly attacked by an enemy force of estimated platoon size. To allow his squad to withdraw, Lieutenant Horn covered the enemy front with an intense volume of fire, thus momentarily stopping the hostile force. After succeeding in breaking contact and withdrawing about 100 yards, the squad was completely surrounded by approximately two platoons of the enemy. Realizing that his squad would be completely annihilated if the situation were not relieved, Lieutenant Horn courageously left his concealed position and charged the enemy at their strongest point, laying down a devastating hail of fire as he advanced. A grenade burst beside him and seriously wounded him in the back and leg but, disregarding his intense pain, Lieutenant Horn undauntedly continued toward the murderous hostile fire, continuing to fire his weapon with deadly accuracy. This fearless and unexpected action so disorganized and confused the foe that the friendly squad was able to break through the encircling enemy force and withdraw to friendly lines. Only when he was sure his men had escaped the hostile trap would Lieutenant Horn proceed to friendly lines. The outstanding gallantry and inspirational leadership displayed by Lieutenant Horn were directly responsible for his squad’s safe withdrawal and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
