The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles E. Horn (ASN: ER-35237836), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 10 February 1951 in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. Sergeant Horn’s platoon was leading the company in an assault against Hill 444. As the platoon neared the crest of the hill, it was met by intense enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire and was forced to withdraw to avoid envelopment by a numerically superior force. Sergeant Horn voluntarily remained behind to cover the withdrawal. Under heavy fire, he steadfastly held his ground against overwhelming odds, holding the enemy off with his accurate rifle fire. Although two of his comrades fell mortally wounded beside him and he was wounded, he fearlessly continued to render covering fire until the platoon had successfully completed its withdrawal. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Horn reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
