The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph L. Homen, Jr. (ASN: RA-11191152), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 4 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. While his position was under heavy enemy attack Private Homen, a 57-mm. recoilless rifle gunner, left his foxhole and advanced under intense hostile fire to render first aid to a wounded comrade. He then returned to his weapon and fired upon the advancing enemy until the position became untenable because of enemy penetration. While other crew members moved the gun to the rear and evacuated casualties with them, Private Homen voluntarily remained behind and fearlessly attacked the enemy with hand grenades in order to cover the withdrawal. By his courageous action he enabled the weapon to be displaced and several wounded men to reach a new firing position. After delaying the enemy he withdrew and resumed his duties as gunner, greatly aiding his company in repelling the hostile assault. The gallantry displayed by Private Homen reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
