The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Dean Milton Holland (ASN: US-55216083), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 10 June and early morning hours of 11 June 1953, in the vicinity of Surang-ni, Korea, the regiment of which Corporal Holland was a member was defending Outpost “Harry” against an attack by approximately 2000 enemy troops. In the initial assault, Corporal Holland observed that one sector was in danger of being penetrated by the enemy and immediately moved to an unprotected knoll overlooking the scene of action. With disregard for his personal safety, he operated his automatic rifle until the threat was dispelled. Corporal Holland then mortally wounded five attackers in close combat, administered aid to a United Nations casualty and aggressively climbed down the slope to a point from which he could accurately fire upon the foe, then organizing at the foot of the hill for another charge. After assisting in repelling this attempt to take the outpost, Corporal Holland rushed to the other side of the hill and joined a counterattacking force in clearing defensive positions occupied by the enemy. He courageously moved out in front of the assault line to cover the advance of his comrades. In this movement, while attempting to neutralize an enemy-held bunker, he was mortally wounded by enemy automatic weapons fire. Corporal Holland’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
