The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class George Hogan Holbrook (ASN: RA-19356552), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 near Yongsan, Korea. On that date his company was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. During this fierce attack the company was forced to withdraw to better positions, leaving some of the wounded behind. Private Holbrook, with utter disregard for his personal safety, crawled back through the intense enemy fire and rendered first aid to three wounded men. He then returned to his company for more supplies. During this action he was wounded but continued his search for other wounded until he was killed by hostile fire. The heroic actions and selfless devotion to his fallen comrades displayed by Private Holbrook reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
