The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Jacob J. Holbert (ASN: RA-13293309), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 11 February 1951, near Sansong-ni, Korea, Corporal Holbert volunteered to make an attempt to rescue the body of his platoon leader. Although his platoon had been pinned down by the intense fire, Corporal Holbert, despite the hail of bullets blanketing the area, moved up the hill toward his fallen leader. In so doing, he was hit in the leg by machine gun fire. Ignoring the wound, he continued to crawl across the exposed ground, firing his rifle in an attempt to silence the enemy machine gun. He was ordered to withdraw but he continued on his mission. Suddenly, another machine gun opened up from the flank. This additional fire made it impossible for him to continue in his wounded condition and he was forced to withdraw. Corporal Holbert’s extreme gallantry and heroism reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
