The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Garrett Hagan, Jr. (ASN: 0-2205989), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 31 July 1952 to 1 August 1952, in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On those dates, Lieutenant Hagan was attached as Forward Observer to an infantry unit engaged in attacking Hill 266, “OLD BALDY”. In order to bring closer and more effective friendly artillery fire to bear upon the enemy, Lieutenant Hagan, with complete disregard for personal safety, voluntarily left the comparative safety of the infantry unit’s forward command post and accompanied the infantry in the assault, effectively adjusting artillery fire as they moved. Upon reaching the summit of “OLD BALDY”, he set up his observation post in a foxhole on the forward crest. Although severely wounded by enemy shell fragments while in this position he continued to call in fire missions until he lost consciousness from loss of blood. His devotion to duty and courageous actions enabled the friendly artillery to give the Infantry maximum support during their mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Hagan reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
