The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Audie C. Hogan (ASN: RA-14387757), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company (then attached to Company I), 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 September 1951 19 September 1951, in the vicinity of Sat’ae-ri, Korea. On that date, Private Hogan’s company was supporting another unit in an assault on a well-fortified enemy-held hill. In the course of this action the leading friendly elements were met with a devastating concentration of hostile fire which pinned them down. Due to the heavy enemy fire it was extremely difficult for the stalled force to evacuate their wounded or be supplied with critically needed ammunition. Realizing the seriousness of this situation and with complete disregard for his own safety, Private Hogan immediately secured two cases of ammunition and fearlessly advanced forward over the hazardous terrain to the forward positions. After delivering the sorely needed ammunition, Private Hogan improvised a stretcher and aided only by a prisoner carried a wounded comrade through the hail of fire. In this act, Private Hogan was badly shaken by a bursting mortar shell and although suffering from shock he continued on and successfully removed the stricken man to a site of safety. Only after he was certain that his comrade was in capable hands did he allow himself to be evacuated. His dauntless courage and selfless devotion to his comrades were an inspiration to all who observed him. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Hogan on this occasion is in accordance with the highest traditions of the military service.
