The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Donald W. Hoffman (ASN: RA-13220275), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. Company F, on that date, was attacking enemy held high ground along the Naktong River. During the advance, the enemy suddenly opened fire with machine guns, mortars, and small arms causing a number of casualties. Some of the wounded fell in exposed areas and the enemy continued to fire upon them. Corporal Hoffman, displaying a selfless devotion to his fallen comrades, advanced into the fire-swept terrain and, making several repeated trips, brought back a wounded soldier each time to a defilade position. Still under extremely heavy fire, he recovered a light machine gun from the wounded crew members, assigned a new crew to the weapon, and moved it into the most favorable position for counter-fire. With the machine gun in operation, he picked up several hand grenades, worked his way around a flank of the enemy position, and hurled grenades into the hostile emplacements. His audacious action caused heavy casualties to the enemy who, disorganized by his bold charge, fled from the area thereby enabling the company to resume the assault. Later in the same engagement, Corporal Hoffman captured three enemy soldiers. The gallantry and devotion to his wounded comrades displayed by Corporal Hoffman reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
