The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry), [then Major] Warren D. Hodges (ASN: 0-37859), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 September 1950 near Chobi-gok, Korea. On the afternoon of that date he was acting as Regimental Operations Officer and was riding in the leading tank of a tank-infantry attack on a heavily armed enemy strong point. From this commanding position, he noticed that the intense enemy machine gun and anti-tank fire was holding up the advance of the infantrymen and endangering the success of the entire attack. He immediately left the protective cover of the tank and rushed across n open space to the infantry, took charge of a rifle platoon and, with complete disregard for the heavy enemy fire, launched an assault on the objective by skillfully executing a flanking maneuver. His example of courage and daring leadership so inspired the troops that they successfully overran the enemy positions and seized large stores of enemy ammunition. The gallantry and skillful leadership displayed by Major Hodges on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of Armed Forces of the United States.
