The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Harold A. Batten (ASN: 109326), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 102d Machine-Gun Battalion, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Marcheville, France, 26 September 1918. While the squad to which Corporal Batten belonged was proceeding to its objective all the other members were either killed or wounded. After procuring assistance for the wounded soldiers, he immediately attached himself to another squad of his section and remained on duty with it throughout the day.
