(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Sidney Rae Hinds (ASN: 0-12851), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Combat Command “B”, 2d Armored Division, in action against the enemy near Uerdingen, Germany, on 3 March 1945. Colonel Hinds led elements of his command to the approaches of the Adolph Hitler Bridge over the Rhine River, in efforts to capture it intact. Teams of volunteers crossed the bridge to seek out the enemy, the first American forces to enter Germany, and returned. Volunteers then traversed the bridge, disarming German demolition charges to capture the bridge intact. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Hinds, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Colonel Gast made a trip through heavy shell fire into the town to scout what forces were in control. He discovered that the village was still held by the enemy, and shot his way out to return to his unit to direct the action. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Hinds, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
