Department of the Army, General Orders No. 40 (June 11, 1948), Amended by General Orders No. 51 (July 20, 1948)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert W. Hansen (ASN: 0-1331728), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division, in action on 28 April 1945. During an attack on a well-concealed Japanese position on Okinawa Shima, the attack bogged down because of heavy mortar and machine gun fire. Lieutenant Hansen ran forward, spotted the Japanese position, signaled his platoon, and led it forward in an advance, during which he was killed. His courageous leadership was the means by which the advance was continued and the objective taken.
