    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Armor) Harry Lester Hillyard (ASN: 0-19524), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, 2d Armored Division, in action against the enemy in France, in August 1944. During six days in early August, Lieutenant Colonel Hillyard displayed exceptional valor in the operations of his unit which formed the advance guard of his armored regiment. He continually placed himself at the head of his battalion, and directed its operations under all types of enemy fire with complete disregard for his own personal safety. Lieutenant Colonel Hillyard’s presence in positions of danger was an inspiration for the officers and men of his command, and was instrumental in the continuing forward movement of the entire command. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Hillyard, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
