Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 828 (December 7, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert H. Hills, Jr. (ASN: RA-12322855), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date, Company L was in the attack to secure vital enemy-held positions. Throughout this action Corporal Hills, a squad leader, repeatedly exposed himself to the hostile fire in order to better direct the fire and movement of his squad. During the friendly unit’s advance, devastating fire from an enemy machine gun emplacement threatened to stall the attack. Without hesitating, Corporal Hills crawled over the fire-swept terrain and, with hand grenades, successfully destroyed the hostile position and killed its occupants. As a result of his heroic action, the friendly unit was able to continue the attack and secure its objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Hills on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
