Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 614 (October 19, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private William H. Hill (ASN: RA-14390520), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandae-ri, Korea. On this date Private Hill’s squad was given the mission of securing a hill defended by a group of heavily armed enemy. As the squad approached the crest of the hill, it was pinned down by intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private Hill, with complete disregard for his personal safety, exposed himself and with his automatic rifle commenced firing upon enemy positions, inflicting numerous enemy casualties. He succeeded in pinning down the enemy long enough for his comrades to withdraw and in his attempt to withdraw, Private Hill was painfully wounded but managed to join his squad. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Hill on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
