Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 157 (June 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Lyle L. Hill (ASN: RA-19333163), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 February 1951, near Chipyong-ni, Korea. On that date he was a member of an infantry unit which was in defensive positions against attack by a numerically superior enemy force. During the attack a tank-led jeep holding two passengers was hit by mortar fire, throwing both men clear of the jeep, and wounding one. The enemy immediately captured one of them, but the wounded man was left to die. Corporal Hill, seeing this from his fox hole some 300 yards away, left his position and carried the wounded man to safety. He then summoned a litter team to evacuate his wounded comrade. His gallant conduct on this occasion was directly responsible for saving the life of the wounded man, and was a source of great pride and inspiration to all who observed him. Corporal Hill’s unselfish display of heroism and gallantry reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
