The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Shinki Higa (ASN: US-50000326), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 September 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Sergeant Higa was with a unit which was engaged in a fierce fire fight on a hill strongly defended by a fanatical enemy force. The leading elements of his unit encountered intense hostile automatic weapons and grenade fire. Most of the enemy fire which hampered the unit’s advance came from a bunker which commanded the surrounding terrain. Sergeant Higa, realizing that this enemy emplacement had to be neutralized, voluntarily and unhesitatingly advanced toward it. Unmindful of the hostile fire directed at him, Sergeant Higa, with rifle fire and hand grenades, forced the enemy to abandon its position. He then took a heavy toll of the foe, who attempted to escape with his rifle. As a result of his valiant efforts his unit was able to advance and secure its objective with a minimum of friendly casualties. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Higa on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
