The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Alfred B. Hansen (ASN: 37163167), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 12 March 1944. Sergeant Hansen contributed materially to the repulse of repeated Japanese assaults on our positions at Bougainville. As a front-line machine gunner, Sergeant Hansen’s initiative and courage were responsible for laying down such a devastating fire the enemy was unable to pierce the lines although they made seven determined attacks in an effort to break through. Although wounded, he remained at his post and fought with fearless tenacity. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Hansen, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
