The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Milton D. Herzer (ASN: RA-16305224), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandaeu-san, Korea. On that date the platoon of which Private Herzer was a member had infiltrated enemy lines and was encircled by the enemy. The numerically superior hostile force immediately launched a fanatic attack upon the unit’s position. Seeing that his section of the defensive perimeter was about to be overrun, Private Herzer left the safety of his position and, in the face of intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire, assaulted the enemy, firing his rifle and throwing grenades. As a result of his courageous action, numerous casualties were inflicted upon the hostile forces and demoralized the remainder, forcing them to abandon their mission. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Private Herzer on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
