The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Medical Service Corps) William H. Herrick (ASN: 0-2262601), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Tosong-ni, Korea, Lieutenant Herrick’s platoon was withdrawing from Hill 283, when a large enemy force attacked from three directions. As Lieutenant Herrick was directing his hard pressed litter teams in the center of the column, an artillery shell exploded and caused several casualties at the end of the line of troops. Disregarding his own safety, Lieutenant Herrick unhesitatingly moved to the area to care for the wounded men. Placing himself in a position where he could most quickly help them, he administered the necessary first aid and personally carried the injured soldiers to safety. His immediate response to the needs of the wounded was instrumental in saving the lives of at least two men. Lieutenant Herrick’s resolute courage and gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
