Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 64 (March 10, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Raymond Hernandez (ASN: RA-39763913), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 November 1950, at Sachang-ni, Korea, Private Hernandez, company communications man, was serving on a road block which came under heavy small arms and mortar fire. When the communication between Company A and the mortar platoon was broken, Private Hernandez volunteered to restore contact. He, with disregard for his personal safety, ran through four hundred yards of bullet riddled terrain, letting out wire and restoring the communications. Later when this wire was broken, Private Hernandez again ran the gauntlet of enemy bullets to carry a radio to the mortar positions. When communications with the forward machine gun positions were broken, Private Hernandez, without hesitation, crawled one hundred yards replacing the wire and restoring communications. The courage and devotion to duty shown by Private Hernandez reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
