The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Thomas Dickson Barton, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne, France, October 8 – 10, 1918. Captain Barton advanced his company against a strongly fortified enemy position, and succeeded in capturing the enemy works, together with twenty machine guns and ninety prisoners. After he had lost all his company officers and sustained many casualties in his command, Captain Barton again moved forward through an intense barrage, and established the most advanced position of the first day of the battle.
