The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Roy C. Herbert (ASN: RA-11167918), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 May 1951, in the vicinity of Kunmol-gol, Korea. On that date the mission of his company was to take up positions north of Kunmol-gol. When the enemy, under cover of darkness, succeeded in infiltrating through the friendly lines and surrounding the battalion command post, Sergeant Herbert unhesitatingly exposed himself to the intense enemy fire and went forth to rescue his wounded battalion commander. After evacuating his commander to safety, he again went forward with a jeep armed with a .50 caliber machine gun. His accurate and intense fire neutralized three enemy machine gun emplacements, killing and wounding many of the enemy. At the same time Sergeant Herbert continued to evacuate wounded comrades under the intense enemy fire. His determined and fearless action thus resulted in the saving of the lives of many of his comrades. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Herbert reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
