The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Harry D. Barton (ASN: 125468), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery A, 6th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fleville, France, 4 October 1918. Being in charge of one of the sections of drivers of his platoon when it was caught in an enemy barrage, Corporal Barton unlimbered his gun and caisson, removed his horses and drivers to a place of safety, and returning to his platoon acted as runner, passing four times over heavily shelled areas.
